Your downtime is important to Coastal Plating so fast turnaround time can be taken into consideration when consulting with one of our representatives.
In this vital industrial specialization, we rebuild and restore all bearing surfaces and main journals with pure chrome. With Coastal Plating shape-conforming anodes and rotating fixtures, we can put hard chrome plate exactly where it belongs and not on thrust face or radii. The chrome plated surfaces provide restoration of highest quality and a face that will resist wear, abrasion, galling, seizing and corrosion. It will perform to you strictest requirements under the severe conditions.
Chrome plated surfaces can stand up to the severe demands of high-use, heavy machinery. With a hardness of 66-70 on Rockwell’s “C” scale, chrome has a melting point of 3488 degrees Fahrenheit.
CHROME PLATING IS DONE THROUGH ELECTRO-CHEMICAL REACTION. 3-6 VOLTS ARE PASSED CONTINUOUSLY FROM LEAD ANODES THROUGH CHROMIC ACID INTO THE FORGED CRANKSHAFT. CHROMIUM IONS ARE THUS DRIVEN FROM THE SOLUTION AND PLATED ONTO THE BEARING AND JOURNAL SURFACES ONLY OF THE SHAFT, AS IT SLOWLY ROTATES IN THE PLATING TANK. TOTAL AMPERAGE MAY RUN AS HIGH AS 4500 AMPS DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE CRANKSHAFT. OUR PLATING TANKS RUN 24 HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. EACH CRANKSHAFT REQUIRES ABOUT 40 CONTINUOUS HOURS IN THE TANK TO DEPOSIT ENOUGH CHROME FOR THE GRINDING.
Crankshaft Grinding and Balancing
After chrome plating, each surface is individually ground to bring it into precise conformity with written specifications and O.E.M. standards. Coastal Plating machinery- much of it imported from Italy- permits the bearing surfaces and journals to be ground to a tolerance of .0002 of an inch.
After grinding, a final Magnaflux examination is performed to insure no flaws exist in any portion of their crankshaft. The shaft is then dynamically balanced so it will run smoothly without vibration or pounding at ALL operating speeds. Also post grinding, the chrome plated surfaces are lapped and polished to make certain all journals, pulley and gear fits and bolt holes are perfect and meet factory standards. A final inspection is made and the written report is personally checked by Coastal Plating Management.
When the crankshaft repair passes final inspection it is immediately painted with a rust-proof treatment for protection in transit or storage, and prepared for shipment back to your job site. Coastal Plating realizes how vital it is to have your crankshaft repaired right the first time, so you may re-assemble your engine and get going again. For this reason no craftsman, no machine operator, no supervisor will permit the restoration process to continue until each stage of workmanship is PERFECT.
